How much retro micromusic can you handle?
This is what people used to write music in my day. (I used the two programs in the bottom row of the Amiga section.)

Ohhh. I wonder if any of those will run on my old Amstrad. Just gotta figure out which one will work on an 8mhz x86 cpu running MsDos with a cga screen and only pc speaker for sound. o.O

PC bleeper sequencer GOOOOOOOOOOO.

In high-school, my mate Scott wrote a sample player for PC bleeper; not sure if it was just 1-bit (on/off) or if he did some clever maths to figure out which pitch to initialise with to best recreate the sample.

It's done with a pulse-width modulation to recreate the the analog waveform. The PC speaker can not only produce tones with a hardware timer, but you can turn a DC signal to the speaker on and off (when the timer is not running). This is used with PWM/duty-cycle to create analog audio. On for x time/off for y time. The ratio of x/y is determined by the current signal level of the analog waveform being reproduced. The inertia of the physical speaker cone smooths the sharp on-off pulses to normal analog pressure waves, similar to some digital amplifiers.

There sure is some irony in a webpage dedicated to tiny programs which make even tinier music that's bloated enoguh to crash my browser (stupid work computer).

And for relevance, I started out with ModEdit 2.0 for MS-DOS. In fact I didn't even have a Sound-Card, so I had to edit in ModEdit, then use Modplay so I could hear it through the PC-Squeaker.

15 years later I can barely play keyboard anymore... REWARDING!! =D
