A new thing..
Any of you have a mental list of things you must do? I have one of those. Not chores so much as just things you procised yourself you'd do ages ago if you had the time, presence of mind, etc. Well, one of the things i never got around to was electronics.

So today i bought Funway Into Electronics kit 1 and started getting to grips with how electricity is turned into other stuff. I shot a timelapse video of myself putting together the Morse key kit:

It's all done with screws and wires, no soldering. Anyway. Fun. :)

Funway Furries REPRESENT! I highly recommend the spring pack to keep your components nice. =3

Funway Furries REPRESENT!

That's it. I'm setting fire to it immediately.

Ohh. you even got the deluxe kit with the shiny morse code key. I only got the basic kit back in the day. More fun with a soldering iron though.

The "X in one" kits are worth looking at if you want to experiment. Whole pile of components all layed out on a board with springs for connecting the wires nice and quick. The 200-in-1 kit I used to use even had a 2 simple IC's on it.

200 in 1 and 300 in 1 REPRESENT! YAY TANDY!

I saw a couple of those when i was at DSE but the price wasn't right. I wanted something noobish.

Aaah, yes. The old Astable Mulvibrator circuit. Great thing about these circuits for use in audio is you can easily change the duty cycle (on/off ratio), and thus the tone and pitch of the sound by changing the values in the Resistor-Capacitor charging circuit (the two middle connections comming off the top "rail" wire). If you do something to one charge circuit, you need to do the opposite to the other charge circuit or the pitch will change. Pity they are only square-wave though :D

Also, 350-in-one with a BREADBOARD and 12 ICs REPRESENT! :D Done the old 130-in-one (with the two simple chips), the 200-in-one, the 250-in-one (with the two medium complexity digital chips) and the 350-in-one with 12 chips, most of which are digital. So "Nyaaaah!" Vulpie :D

Also, MICROPROCESSORS FTW!

Hee, forgot you were into this sort of thing. :)

Yeah, being stuck with a 50% square-wave is moderately annoying. I'm still very much at the beginning stage with simple circuitry though. There are lots of things i don't know about yet.

I made that when I was 9... and the book is still the same!

[info]wolphin made that too, and the book was still the same. It's so old that some of the parts in it have been phased out, helpfully explained by the accompanying notes in the box of components that comes with it.

As a result i wouldn't have been able to build this stuff without [info]wolphin pointing out to me the little yellow-topped capacitors and telling me how to read them. Oh well, is nice to live with an engineer. :)

Is that chocolate on your nose..? Please tell me it's chocolate.

That said... It is an oddly fascinating video.. Though I won't pretend to fully understand it. lol
