| NIN's new album. |
[May. 7th, 2008|09:34 pm] |
Of course i've got something to say about the Nine Inch Nails album The Slip. Yes, i've got a copy. Distributed as a FLAC by the band themselves. Over BitTorrent, because it costs them less bandwidth if it's shared between users.
It's a groundbreaking release for a major act in many ways, not the least of which being that as i was driving to work today and thinking hmm i'd have done that bit differently trent, i realised that thanks to remix.nin.com offering the track separations of the entire album i actually could do it differently. So i have.
There's one track on it that i'm quite fond of (the token sprawling ambient track) called Corona Radiata, but the track just before it, Lights in the sky, was a good remixing candidate for me because there was so little to remix and i just needed to write some music to unwind with. I find on the remix site that other versions are even wider of the original than mine, and that there are some pretty cool ideas floating around here. It's brilliant hearing familiar songs taken to pieces and put back together in so many ways.
And i'm not even that big of an NIN fan, to be honest; i might have Further down the spiral somewhere in my collection still, but i've owned The downward spiral (everyone my age did, i think), The fragile and the remixes of The perfect drug. I even bought the Lost Highway soundtrack off 2 the Ranting Gryphon's brother which was all Trent. I've got the original Quake with NIN soundtrack somewhere in my collection too. I've always had time for Trent and NIN though — you can't accuse NIN of ever being musically uninteresting, and anyone who can get Alan Moulder on the desk will at least have something technically listenable.
And now, thanks to Trent embracing Creative Commons and remix culture, i can make it sound how i damn well like. :) |

The Celtic languages are probably a bit generously mapped but if they say so, OK. |

| Food, glorious food |

This is not a meme. It is a questionnaire. kinkyturtle did it.
1. Are you a vegetarian? Vegan? I most certainly eat meat, but i don't eat pork or bacon even though pigs would be quite happy to eat me.
2. What's your favorite food? Sushi, probably. Meat-heavy stuff; i will cook an entire packet of steak and eat that by itself when i'm hungry sometimes.
White bread or whole wheat wholemeal? Wholemeal. More interesting texture and just better for me.
4. What's for breakfast? Usually a Sanitarium Up-N-Go Energise on weekdays. Sultana Bran with cinnamon apples on the weekend.
5. You're making a Dagwood sandwich. What's in it? I have no idea. I'm not that big on coldcuts since most of them involve pork.
6. What's on your pizza? Chicken, pineapple, onion, fresh tomato, oregano and chilli sprinkles on a barbecue sauce base. It is a variation of fallimar's rexipe.
7. Coffee, tea, milk, or soda soft drink? Tea (chai and earl grey) for me, white with three sweeteners. Occasionally coffee if i need it. Almost never ever soda.
8. Dark, milk, or white chocolate? Dark. 85% is good. 99% is getting unpalatable.
9. Teetotal, beer, wine, or hard liquor? Teetotal but for when i use small quantities of fortified wine for cooking or medicinal purposes.
10. Does cilantro coriander leaf taste like citrus, or like soap? Soap. It tastes like rank shite.
11. Is chorizo the greatest thing ever or is it totally disgusting? Never tried it.
12. Do you use garlic like a vegetable or like a spice? Spice.
13. Onions: raw, cooked, or not at all? It used to depend on the dish, but now i prefer cooked if at all.
14. Does broccoli taste sweet or bitter? No idea, though i hold it in about as much esteem as coriander.
15. How do you feel about fish? Not particularly keen on fish. Smoked salmon in particular is something some people find delicious and other people find horrible.
16. How about sushi? Chicken katsu makizushi is love. But fattening.
17. Fave ethnic cuisine? By the amount of it i eat i have to say Japanese, but fuck me those Italians can cook.
18. What's your favorite fruit? Pears, despite Eddie Izzard's opinion of them.
19. Cheese - thumbs up or thumbs down? I don't have much of it anymore.
20. Finally, favorite dessert? Home made ice-cream made by me, vanilla if possible. I bought some chocolate gelati from an Italian smallgoods place the other day. It was pretty good but i like my chocolate gelati better. :) |

| Singing range |
[Apr. 30th, 2008|06:16 pm] |
So finally tonight i sat down and bothered to find out what sort of note span i can manage. You'd think i'd have already worked it out but no.
My comfortable singing range when assez-cold goes from fundamental 70Hz up to fundamental 340Hz in non-falsetto (that's D2 to F4) and from MIDI notes G#3 - C5 (fundamental 200Hz - 510Hz) in falsetto.
That's almost three octaves total and two octaves without the use of falsetto. Not too shabby. :) |

"If only that was possible." "If only that were possible. Conditional clause."
Not so much conditional clause as subjunctive mood that determines the choice of were over was. |

| A new thing.. |
[Apr. 26th, 2008|09:05 pm] |
Any of you have a mental list of things you must do? I have one of those. Not chores so much as just things you procised yourself you'd do ages ago if you had the time, presence of mind, etc. Well, one of the things i never got around to was electronics.
So today i bought Funway Into Electronics kit 1 and started getting to grips with how electricity is turned into other stuff. I shot a timelapse video of myself putting together the Morse key kit:
It's all done with screws and wires, no soldering. Anyway. Fun. :) |
